Shira Route

SCENIC · REMOTE · HIGH-ALTITUDE START

The Shira Route is one of the most dramatic and scenic approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro, ideal for experienced trekkers seeking a more remote and elevated adventure.

Starting at 3,500m (11,500 ft) on the Shira Plateau, this route offers immediate high-altitude exposure, making it best suited for those with prior acclimatization experience.

Shira is also a fantastic alternative to Lemosho, offering a more direct approach to Kilimanjaro’s most stunning viewpoints.

It later merges with the Lemosho Route, passing through spectacular landscapes, from moorlands to alpine deserts, with fewer crowds along the way.

At Kilimanjaro Climbing Club, we recommend the Shira Route for climbers who want to challenge themselves on a less-traveled path, while enjoying some of Kilimanjaro’s most breathtaking scenery.
