I used my daypack and wrapped some clothes around it\u2026 and let\u2019s just say my neck hated me. Even a small <strong>inflatable pillow or travel neck pillow <\/strong>maakt een enorm verschil. I took <strong>Diamox<\/strong>, the medication people use to help with altitude sickness. And yes, it helped\u2026 but it came with weird surprises.<h4>Overal tintelingen: het 'Botox'-gevoel<\/h4><p>At one point on the climb, I suddenly felt like I\u2019d had Botox - but not the good kind. My face, hands, even my feet were all full of pins and needles. Like ants walking under your skin, or like you\u2019re reaching into a bush full of tiny invisible leaves. It\u2019s not painful, just\u2026 strange. Totally normal with Diamox, but I wish someone had warned me, so I wouldn\u2019t think I was turning into a robot. It goes away - don\u2019t worry.<\/article><article class=\"card\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"100\"><h3><span class=\"icon\">\ud83d\udc8a<\/span>Wat is Diamox eigenlijk?<\/h3><p>Diamox (acetazolamide) is a medication that helps your body adjust to high altitude. A lot of people take it before and during Kilimanjaro to prevent altitude sickness.<p>Als we het over Diamox hebben, laten we dan niet vergeten <strong>Other Weird-but-Normal Diamox Side Effects:<\/strong><ul><li>Vaak plassen.<li>Metaalachtige smaak.<\/ul><p><em><strong>Tip-idee<\/strong>:<\/em> Just like altitude, Diamox is personal. What works for one climber might feel weird to another. Stap voor stap.<\/ul><\/article><article class=\"card\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"200\"><h3><span class=\"icon\">\ud83c\udf26<\/span>Het weer is alles<\/h3><p>Als je mooi weer hebt - gefeliciteerd, dan heb je geluk. Maar reken er niet op.<p><em><strong>Tip-idee<\/strong>:<\/em> Weather changes fast on Kilimanjaro. One day can be sunny, the next can freeze you. Layers and waterproofs aren\u2019t optional - they\u2019re survival.<\/article><article class=\"card\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"250\"><h3><span class=\"icon\">\u26fa<\/span>Tent Talk - Groter is niet altijd beter<\/h3><p>Ja, je kunt een walk-in tent huren (tenten waar je in kunt staan). Klinkt dat luxe? Dat is het ook... Maar:<ul><li>Grote tent - meer lucht = duurt langer om op te warmen.<li>Gezelligere tenten voelen warmer aan. Grotere tenten voelen ruimer aan.<\/ul><p><em><strong>Tip-idee<\/strong>:<\/em> Ken uw prioriteit.<\/article><article class=\"card\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"300\"><h3><span class=\"icon\">\ud83c\udf92<\/span>Dagrugzakdrama: vul hem niet zomaar<\/h3><p>You\u2019ll carry your 30\u201340L daypack every day - not your big duffel (that\u2019s for porters). But here\u2019s what I didn\u2019t think about:<p>Even if it fits everything, it has to sit well on your back. And rain? It finds its way in unless your zippers are tight and you\u2019ve got a rain cover.<p><em><strong>Tip-idee<\/strong>:<\/em><ul><li>Maak een testwandeling met een volledig beladen dagrugzak voordat u op reis gaat.<li class=\"translation-block\">Gebruik een rugzak met <strong>borst- en heupbanden<\/strong> (dit helpt enorm bij de gewichtsverdeling).<li>A rain cover is a must. If you don\u2019t have one - rent or buy. Even drizzle can ruin your clothes.<\/ul><\/article><article class=\"card\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"350\"><h3><span class=\"icon\">\ud83d\udebb<\/span>Real Talk Toiletten tijd<\/h3><p>Je zult ofwel:<ul><li>Gebruik de openbare toiletten op de kampen (die ruw kunnen zijn), OF<li class=\"translation-block\">Gebruik een priv\u00e9-toilettent (een kleine, schone tent met een zitje)<\/ul><p><em><strong>Tip-idee<\/strong>:<\/em> Mijn advies aan jou: boek een priv\u00e9-toilettent!!! Je zult me \u200b\u200blater nog dankbaar zijn\ud83d\ude09<\/article><article class=\"card\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"400\"><h3><span class=\"icon\">\u2668\ufe0f<\/span>Mijn geheime wapen: warme pakkingen<\/h3><p class=\"translation-block\">Ik weet niet hoe ik dit moet zeggen zonder dramatisch te klinken, maar ik ben zo dankbaar voor warme pakketten.<p><em><strong>Tip-idee<\/strong>:<\/em> Koop het, je zult er geen spijt van krijgen.<\/article><article class=\"card\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"450\"><h3><span class=\"icon\">\ud83e\udde0<\/span>Wat is het beste advies dat ik u kan geven?<\/h3><p class=\"translation-block\">Kijk niet omhoog op de topnacht. Vooral niet op de topnacht.\nAls het donker, koud en moe is, lijkt de top onmogelijk ver weg \u2013 en dat kan je hoofd in de war brengen.<p>I learned to <strong>look down instead<\/strong>.<br>Not metaphorically \u2014 literally.<br>I was just walking\u2026 counting small stones.<br>One step, one breath, one rock at a time. Worked for me.<br>And don\u2019t forget: success on this mountain is mental.<\/article><article class=\"card\" data-aos=\"fade-up\" data-aos-delay=\"500\"><h3><span class=\"icon\">\u2728<\/span>Blijf positief - je geest is je sterkste wapen!<\/h3><p>Let me be real with you:<br><strong>Your brain is powerful.<\/strong><br>And I\u2019m not just saying that like some motivational quote on Instagram.<br>I mean it. I learned it the hard way.<br><strong>Trust me. I wasn\u2019t fully prepared. But now you can be.<br>Stay warm. Stay positive.
